On the basis of interviews with seventy members of the executive management boards of twenty five large Dutch organisations, he maps out the motivations, motives and backgrounds of Dutch top managers.

The quality of an organisation stands or falls with the quality of its management. Many people will support this assertion without question. This is why libraries full of books have been written about leadership. The number of people receiving direction is, however, many times greater than the number of managers. Notwithstanding this fact, professional literature up until now has devoted little attention to the question of accepting direction and the various ways in which this can be done.
